The Must-Ask Questions
The venue is your biggest expense and the foundation of your entire wedding. Don't sign anything until you've asked these:
Availability & Basics
- Is my date available? — And what's the backup date if it's taken?
- What's the total cost, all-in? — Ask for EVERYTHING: room rental, service charge, tax, overtime, setup/cleanup fees. The "starting at" price is never the real price.
- What's the capacity? — For both ceremony and reception configurations. Ask about fire code limits, not just "comfortable" capacity.
- What time can we start setting up? — And when do we have to be out? You need minimum 2 hours for setup.
- What's the overtime rate? — Because the party WILL run late. Some venues charge $500-1000/hour overtime.
Food & Drink
- Can we bring our own caterer, or must we use yours? — If they require in-house catering, what's the cost per person?
- Do you accommodate halal / kosher / dietary needs? — Critical for Muslim weddings.
- Can we bring our own cake? — Some venues charge a "cake cutting fee" ($2-5/slice!) if you bring outside dessert.
- Is there a minimum food & beverage spend? — Some venues require you spend a minimum (e.g., $10,000 on food).
Logistics
- Is there parking? — How many spaces? Valet available? Cost?
- Can we do the ceremony AND reception here? — One venue for both saves transportation and time.
- Is there a bridal suite / getting-ready room? — You need a private space before the ceremony.
- What's the rain plan? — For outdoor venues, where does everyone go if it rains?
Decor & Setup
- What's included in decor? — Chairs, tables, linens, centerpieces? What do we need to bring/rent?
- Are there restrictions on decor? — No candles? No confetti? No tape on walls? Know before you plan your aesthetic.
Red Flags
- They won't give you a written total — only "estimates."
- They pressure you to book immediately ("someone else is looking at this date").
- No references or reviews from recent weddings.
- Unclear cancellation/refund policy.
- They seem annoyed by your questions — if they're difficult now, imagine the wedding day.
