To Register or Not to Register?
In Western tradition, registries are standard. In Arab and many Muslim cultures, cash and gold are the traditional gifts. Here's how to navigate both worlds gracefully.
If Your Culture Is Cash/Gold
- Don't create a traditional registry — It can come across as presumptuous. Guests already know the expectation.
- If asked directly, it's okay to say "Your presence is the greatest gift, but if you'd like to give, we appreciate contributions toward [our home/honeymoon]."
- Set up a money box or gift table at the reception with a tasteful sign.
- Gold is queen — Many Arab families give gold jewelry. This is in addition to the shabka.
If You Want a Registry
- Register at 2-3 stores max — Amazon + one department store + one specialty store covers all budgets.
- Range of prices — Include items from $25 to $500 so every guest can find something comfortable.
- Don't register for things you already have — It shows when you return everything.
- Experiences are okay — Honeymoon funds, cooking classes, wine subscriptions are modern registry favorites.
Modern Alternatives
- Honeymoon fund — Guests contribute to specific experiences (dinner in Paris, spa day in Bali).
- House down payment fund — Practical and meaningful.
- Charity donation — Ask guests to donate to a cause you care about in lieu of gifts.
- Mix it up — Half traditional registry, half honeymoon fund. Give guests options.
Thank You Notes
- Send within 3 months of the wedding. Ideally within 1 month.
- Handwritten, always — Even in 2026, a handwritten note means more than a text.
- Be specific — "Thank you for the beautiful KitchenAid mixer" not "thank you for your generous gift."
- For cash gifts — Don't mention the exact amount. "Thank you for your generous gift — we're putting it toward our new home" is perfect.
- Include everyone — If someone didn't give a gift, send a thank you for attending anyway.
